Norfolk churches attempt world carols record

GuinnessCarolSingingRecordThis Sunday churches in Thorpe St Andrew, Fakenham and Great Yarmouth are taking part in a new nationwide attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for the largest number of Christmas carol singers singing at the same time.

On Sunday December 16 three churches from across Norfolk are taking part in an attempt to beat the current Guinness World Record set up last year when churches across the UK and abroad attracted a total of 18,114 carol singers to sing five classic carols in unison – beating the previous record of just 14,100 established by Disney in 2009.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God at Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, Fakenham Baptist Community Church and the Great Yarmouth Salvation Army will join in this year’s record-breaking attempt at 7.00pm when, like last year, the five selected carols will be sung in churches up and down the country.

The carols are Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Premier Christian Radio, which is coordinating the national attempt, will also play the five carols on the radio, enabling local churches to use the broadcast as their backing music and assisting nationwide unison.

Peter Kerridge, CEO of Premier Christian Radio said: “Last year’s record-breaking attempt brought many people into churches who were not regular visitors, and served as a timely reminder that Christmas starts with Christ.  We received many positive reports from churches telling us they were full to overflowing and what an enjoyable evening it had been for all concerned.”

Chioma Onyeme the Pastor-in-Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Thorpe St Andrew said: “We are inviting everyone from our local community to join us in the carol singing record attempt on December 16.

Thorpe St Andrew Town Mayor John Ward will give an opening welcome speech to the participants who will undoubtedly have lots of fun taking part in a national challenge while enjoying festive carols and festive bites.”

The Redeemed Christian Church of God will start their Guinness World Record Breaking Carol Service at 5pm at the Dussindale Centre, Pound Lane, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, NR7 0SR.

Fakenham Baptist Community Church will start their Carol Service with a difference at 6.30pm at 10 Mill Court, Fakenham, NR21 9AU.

The Great Yarmouth Salvation Army will start their Community Carol Concert at 5.30pm at the St George's Theatre, King Street, Great Yarmouth, NR30 2PG.
