Classic cars rally heads for Norfolk churches

ClassicCars450cPaulHurstNorwich Cathedral will welcome classic cars from across the county on Saturday, August 3, for the Norfolk Open Churches Classic Car Run.

Organised by MG car enthusiasts, Richard Mitchell and Maurice Gowen, in conjunction with Norwich Cathedral, the seventh annual event sees all makes and models of classic cars and sports cars, dating from the 1930s all the way to the 2000s, gather at Norwich Cathedral before embarking on a 57-mile journey taking in nine of Norfolk’s beautiful and historic churches.

The Run has over 65 entrants this year, with people predominantly travelling from Norfolk and Suffolk. Amongst the entrants will be classic car enthusiast the Very Revd Graham Smith, the Dean of Norwich, who will be taking part in his 1960s Daimler SP250.

Speaking about the Run, the Dean, said: “Put some of the loveliest classic cars in Norfolk together with some of the loveliest parish churches of Norfolk and you have a perfect day! It’s a great pleasure to welcome to the Cathedral once again the Diocesan Classic Car Run. Fortified by breakfast at the Refectory and blessed by the Bishop of Norwich, over 65 cars will set off to visit churches in Norfolk, some of which are rarely in the public eye. The day ends in Heydon with a short service in the church at 4pm, followed by tea. Do come and view the cars at the Cathedral from 9am before they are waved off at 9.30am.”

Cars will arrive at the Cathedral from 9am and following a brisk breakfast in the Refectory, they will be waved off by The Bishop of Norwich, The Rt Revd Graham James, at 9.30am. At the end of the Run, a short spiritual pit-stop service will be given by the Dean of Norwich, the Very Revd Graham Smith.
