Matthew Project taken over by young people

Taking part in the Children’s Commissioners takeover day 2014 young people in Norwich took over The Matthew Project Unity Service for the day on Friday November 21,2014. This national event, led by The Children’s Commissioner for England gives children and young people the chance to shadow jobs, get involved in decision-making and offer their opinions on key issues.

matthewprojleafletsThe Matthew Project Unity Service provides support and advice for young people who are using drugs and alcohol and those affected by another’s substance use. Work includes 121 sessions, group work, information and advice, professional drug awareness and targeted group work within schools and community settings.

Naomi Selim, unity services manager said, “ This is the third year in which The Matthew Project has participated in National Takeover Day and we are very excited to have a range of young people ‘taking over’ this year.

Young people were in charge of organisation, design, and production of a new resource, aimed at those who are affected by the substance misuse of someone else. The contribution of these young people has been fantastic and will enable us to improve our support to this group.”

One young person involved said “I had a great day and learnt that I can be more confident in speaking in front of people about my ideas…I have learnt a lot about what The Matthew Project does and cheers for asking me to come! ?

Another young person said: “It was definitely an eye opener to the ongoing situations that young people face involving substance misuse. It was fun and inspiring, designing something that could potentially save someone’s life in the future and also help inform them on what to do to distance themselves if something happens.”
