Norwich Evening News' online poll conducted on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day attracted hundreds of votes and resulted in Edith Cavell being named ‘Norfolk’s Greatest Woman’. The heroic nurse who was inspired by her strong Anglican faith, polled first with 35% of the vote. The shortlist also included Quakers Elizabeth Fry and Dorothy Jewson. Elizabeth Fry worked to reform prison conditions for women in the early 19th century and was a minister of the Society of Friends. Dorothy Jewson, who came from a Baptist family, was a suffragette and one of the first female members of Parliament elected in 1923 to represent Norwich. She became a Quaker in later life. Fourteenth century Norwich mystic Julian, who put into writing the Revelations of Divine Love, was also included on the shortlist. Well known cookery writer, joint majority shareholder of Norwich City and devout Catholic, Delia Smith also made the shortlist which was drawn up by the Norwich Evening News.
