Reverse Advent Calendar 640
Norfolk's Foodbanks launch Reverse Advent Calendars

This November, to prepare for the increased demand that Christmas brings, Foodbanks in Norwich, Thetford, King’s Lynn and Cromer are encouraging supporters to prepare a ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ donating food items for those who would otherwise go hungry.

Reverse Advent Calendar PosterChristmas is coming and for some in Norfolk that can mean a lack of food and the harsh reality of living in financial crisis.

Foodbanks in Norwich, Thetford, King’s Lynn and Cromer are appealing for kind hearted people to take part in their 'Reverse Advent Calendar' campaign to help those facing food poverty over the festive period.

Instead of consuming chocolate, as with a traditional advent calendar, with a 'Reverse Advent Calendar' you donate a staple food item each day for 25 days.

Hannah Worsely, Norwich foodbank Project Manager said: “We are absolutely delighted that due to popular demand, our Reverse Advent Calendar campaign is back!  Last year we had over 3.5 tonnes donated through the campaign.  With the Reverse Advent Calendar campaign, supporters collect an item of some of Foodbank’s most needed food items each day from November 6, combined with a festive treat on the 25th day.  These can then be donated from December 1, giving plenty of time to be sorted, packed and given out to those in need.”

"Christmas can be a difficult time for individuals and families who live on extremely tight budgets and find themselves facing increased winter fuel bills which leave them choosing between heating or eating. Keeping warm can mean a family being pushed into a food crisis."

Donations made to Foodbanks are used to provide three days of nutritionally-balanced, emergency food for people in crisis who have been referred by frontline professional agencies such as Citizens Advice or social services.

Foodbanks are asking donors to give store-cupboard staples, such as long-life fruit juice, tinned meat, cereal bars, pasta sauce, instant mash, instant coffee and tinned fruit, in addition to festive treats.
