Night at the Oscars with church-linked Norwich choir

An award-winning community choir formed from members of Oak Grove Community Church and Catton's local community are performing a Night at the Oscars on April 28.

The Catton Community Choir will perform a Night at the Oscars on Saturday, April 28, 7.30pm at Catton Grove Primary School

The Choir, which was a joint winner of the BBC Norfolk Choir of the Year in 2011, is formed from members of Oak Grove Community Church, where the choir holds rehearsals on Monday evenings, and the local community.

The choir has been rehearsing hard for the past four months on a varied repertoire of songs from the movies - from James Bond to Mary Poppins, and Hairspray to La, La, Land.

Choir Director Catherine Wright said: “There will be something for everyone to enjoy. In a change from their usual uniform, the choir members will be dressing for a red carpet experience and we are encouraging our audience to do the same!”

Catherine said: “Catton Community Choir is a welcoming group for anyone who enjoys singing. We don’t hold auditions, and you don’t have to be able to read music. Some of our members have done lots of singing before and some have no experience at all and just come to meet new friends.

“The choir is a real bridge between the church and the community – the Choir leads the Christmas Carol service and Maundy Thursday service for Oak Grove Community Church each year.

“There’s a real family feel and we have a wide age range. We have staff from the local school, retired folk, stay-at-home parents and people in full-time work. All are united by their love of singing and if you ask any of them, they’ll say what a positive impact singing with others has on their lives. Singing is a fantastic boost for mental health and for many of our members it gives them a lift that other activities can’t quite provide.”

Tickets for the Night at the Oscars cost £5 and are available from admin@oakgrovecommunitychurch.co.uk or 01603 403388.
