Gorleston Church to open doors for Christmas lunch
A church in Gorleston is opening its doors to anyone in the area who would benefit from having somewhere warm and friendly to come this Christmas Day.
St Mary Magdalene Church in Gorleston will be serving a free Christmas Day lunch to those who might otherwise be on their own or who don’t have anywhere else to go this Christmas. The Christmas Day lunch has been a regular fixture at the church for the last decade and the attendance has been steadily growing over the years. This year they are expecting around 50 people to attend.
Rev Matthew Price, minister of St Mary Magdalene Church, commented, “celebrating Christ’s birth is best done in community. We recognise that Christmas can be a difficult time for some and just as God expressed his love for the world by sending Jesus, we want to express that love by providing a warm and friendly welcome to anyone who might appreciate it.”
Stuart and his wife Julie will be leading the kitchen team for the sixth year this Christmas Day. He explained: “Being involved on Christmas Day makes our Christmas; we can’t think of anywhere we would rather be. The true spirit of Christmas is love and we see this lunch as a way of sharing that love with some who particularly need it.”
The Christmas Day lunch is an addition to St Mary Magdalene’s regular drop-in lunch, known as The Bridge, which serves a free three course meal to between 60 and 70 people every Tuesday.
The doors will open on Christmas Day at 11.30am (after the Christmas morning service which begins at 10.30am) and lunch will be served at 12.30pm.
The church is grateful for the support it has received from the employees of Shell, Stork, Salamas and WorleyParsons as well as the patrons of the King William pub in Gorleston. Between them, they have raised £1009 which will contribute to both the cost of the lunch as well as a small Christmas gift for each person attending.
Rev Price continued, “if there is anyone who would appreciate lunch on Christmas Day, they would be welcome to join us”
