Sheringham and Cromer’s Catholic priest retires

Parishioners of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Sheringham turned out in force at the end of August to say farewell to Father Denys Lloyd, who is retiring as priest in charge of the parish. Tony Rothe reports.

Sheringham denys 750ATFr Denys was the Catholic priest in Sheringham for over 11 years, and during his time there successfully managed the challenging task of merging the parishes of Sheringham and Cromer, frequently travelling between both churches to take services.

The special service on Sunday August 25 was followed by a buffet lunch in St Joseph’s Hall followed by tea in the gardens, where Fr Denys opened his presents, including a case of silver ceremonial goblets. Guests also enjoyed a cake which depicted Fr Denys relaxing in an armchair!

Fr Denys has retired following his eightieth birthday, and has gone to live in Norwich where it is most likely he will continue to work for Right Reverend Alan Hopes, Catholic bishop of East Anglia.

He is succeeded by Fr James Fyfe who is now getting acquainted with the combined Parish of Cromer and Sheringham, and recently arrived here from Wisbech Parish.
