Norfolk chaplaincy offers support for people leaving prison
Community Chaplaincy Norfolk (CCN) is a Christian charity that provides volunteer mentors for prison leavers of all faiths and none, supporting them to rebuild their lives after prison, as its team explains.
How does it work?
Based on a model established by the national Community Chaplaincy Association, CCN employs a small staff team: to recruit, train and support volunteer mentors; to assess potential clients; to liaise with the prison authorities, probation, and other relevant agencies; and to allocate clients to mentors.
We are based in Norwich city centre and often meet clients at St Stephen’s Church café. We are very grateful for the relationship we have with the St Stephens’ staff team.
The Client Journey
Our work is not time limited. Once a person has been accepted as a CCN client, a mentor will make contact with them while they are still in prison, to build up a relationship and identify the kind of support they will need to achieve their goals.
On the day of release, we try to meet each client at the gate and accompany them to probation, accommodation and any other appointments. The first day can be particularly hard for those who have been in prison for a long time and those who are trying to break free from a cycle of re-offending, for different reasons, so having someone by their side is invaluable. This is followed by regular meetings with their mentor to discuss progress and work through any challenges.
“This has been one of the best things I’ve found to help with rehabilitation…I don’t think I would have made it on my own if I’m honest.”
“My mentor is always there if and when I need them. I feel comfortable enough to be able to talk about anything and always receive the best advice.”
“They helped me with trying to overcome my social anxiety on public transport.”
“Since I have left prison they have helped me build a relationship with my kids.”

Volunteer Mentors
Our mentors come from a diverse background of life experiences and beliefs.
All mentors undertake an initial training course (pictured above) covering: the criminal justice system, communication skills, boundaries, personal safety, anti-corruption, goal setting, practicalities, record keeping, safeguarding and trauma informed mentoring. This is followed by additional training and group support sessions. All mentors are also supported by regular one-to-one sessions with the Mentor Coordinator.
We would love to hear from you if you might like to become a Mentor for CCN. You can find more information on our website or contact details below.
“It’s just helping that person to walk life’s journey, really.” CCN Mentor.
Other Services in the Community
Norfolk has a rich diversity of services available to help clients with applying for benefits, recovering from addictions, and opportunities for voluntary positions, positive activities, training, education, or work. Mentors signpost clients to these agencies and explore options with them.
We co-ordinate a quarterly Caring for Prison Leavers Network of organisations working with people with convictions, which has proved invaluable at connecting services and providing multi agency support for our clients.
If you are interested in joining the network or discussing partnership working, please get in touch.
A Christian Ethos – open to all
CCN is not part of the prison system and, while it is a Christian charity, it is not attached to any one denomination. We welcome clients and mentors of all faiths and none.
Benefitting the Wider Community
By supporting prison leavers we are reducing the likelihood of them reoffending. This not only helps them, but those affected by their crimes, who range from their family and friends to the people in their neighbourhood and local businesses. Our aim is to help the individual find purpose and reintegrate into society, and break the cycle of crime and addiction. We are all well aware of how overcrowded our prisons are, so if we can help any number of people turn their lives around and help them to give back to society via volunteering or work, this is a great achievement.
Funding
Our current funding is predominantly grant-based, but this is never certain, and we would like to build up regular support from local people, organisations, churches and businesses. If you would like us to come and give a presentation to your group please just contact us, we would be more than happy to come along and explain a little about the criminal justice system, how we work and hopefully have a mentor and client to share with you too.
Donate
Maybe you haven’t got the time to be a mentor, but would like to support us, please set up a regular or one-off donation via our website or using the QR code. £10 pays for a prison leaver to meet their mentor for a coffee, £30 covers a mentor’s travel expenses for a month, £50 enables us to train a new volunteer mentor.
Could your church or group adopt us as Charity of the month once a year?
Could your business sponsor us?
Would you be interested in the ‘Caring for Prison Leaver Training’ we could offer your group or employees?
Prayer
Each season we produce a colourful Prayer Newsletter, this can be accessed via our website, but if you would like it emailed to you hot off the press, please contact us.
Presentations
Would you like us to come and present to a group you are involved with? We explain how we work and give an insight into the criminal justice system. We can often bring along a mentor and/or client to share their experience and journey too. Contact us if you’d like to know more.
