Norwich Cathedral tops people's pride poll

Norwich Cathedral - people's favourite

For more than 900 years it has towered above the city, but now Norwich's Anglican Cathedral and its iconic spire has come on top of a poll naming people's favourite places in the city.

The people of Norwich voted the cathedral their favourite place in the city in the Pride of Place poll ahead of other cultural and historical gems like The Forum, which came second, and Norwich Castle, which came third.

Norwich City Council took part in the Pride of Place poll by inviting visitors to click and vote for one of ten locally-nominated top spots on the website.

In an online list, residents across the city voted for a mix of old, traditional buildings and new and influential hubs of activity.

Norwich Cathedral came first in the list and was voted the place which makes people feel the most proud of their home city.

The forum and the castle came in second and third spots, with the Sainsbury Centre and Norwich Market joint fourth.

Brenda Ferris, deputy leader of Norwich City Council and executive member for culture, said: “I'm not surprised to find that our top two places went to the very old and the very new since our fine city has always prided itself on its heritage while also being proud to pioneer innovation and access our city council services online.”

Almost 37,000 went online to vote for their favourite place in this first national council led poll.

Further down the list was Marston Marsh in fifth place while loyal fans voted Carrow Road into sixth, UEA broad in seventh, the newly re-furbished Cinema City in eighth and the prestigious Guildhall in ninth place.

The Pride of Place poll was part of the government's Connect to your Council campaign, which aims to encourage citizens to access their local authority services online.
