Norfolk church appeals for new service venue

By Keith Morris

2010: A vibrant Romanian Orthodox church in Norfolk is appealing for help to find a Norwich venue to hold its Sunday worship services for a congregation of up to 50.

The Romanian Orthodox Community in Norwich and East Anglia needs a church, hall or room that would accommodate a community of up to 50 people, every Sunday, for two hours between the hours of 8am-1pm.

Priest-in-charge Revd Dr Liviu Barbu said: “We are currently meeting in a temporary venue in Hedenham but as most of our members live in Norwich we want to find a location in the city as quickly as possible.” Our community is made up of young Romanian working professionals, but there are also English and other nationalities. The current Sunday attendance is about 30 to 40 people.

"We already have links with the Anglican Cathedral in Norwich and would love to be among the churches already in the city," said Liviu.

“We will ensure an orderly and responsible use of the facilities, pay running expenses and some rent. Our parish is part of a traditional yet vibrant Eastern Orthodox Church that bears witness to the love of God and of all people and we would like to be part of the Christian family in Norwich.”

The church parish is part of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Central Europe which has its administrative office in France and is led by Archbishop Joseph Pop. The Metropolis is part of the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate which is in communion with other Orthodox sister Churches (of Russia, Greece, Serbia, etc.) as well as with the historical patriarchates of Antioch, Alexandria, Jerusalem and Constantinople.
