Tribute to greatly loved Norwich church organist
Greatly-loved church organist at Surrey Chapel, John Tillett died on January 4 aged 85.
John Tillett was greatly loved by the whole church family and respected as a fine example of Christian humility, faithfulness and generosity. He was organist at Surrey Chapel, Norwich since 1978.
He was still playing for Sunday services until about six weeks before he died. When he took over as principal organist for the Chapel the organ was the only instrumental accompaniment for the hymns. In his prime John was an outstanding church organist.
He remained cheerful and supportive through all the changes in music in worship that have taken place since then, coping with contemporary songs, other instruments, and even playing along with guitars and drums.
A Thanksgiving Service for John will be held at Surrey Chapel on Thursday 23 January at 2.30 pm, following the earlier interment at Sprowston Cemetery. John's wife, Barbara, is in the care of a nursing home in Norwich.
