A Valentine's thought for the broken-hearted

bandaged heartWith Saint Valentine’s Day dominating the media and the thoughts of many, Divorce Recovery Workshops Norwich Co-ordinator, Michele Curtis, spares a though for those who find this all too much.

It’s the season for “Love” again……everywhere you go there are reminders.  Card shops, florists, restaurants advertising “romantic dinner for two” and even supermarkets where every isle seems to have something to celebrate Valentine’s day.

However, many people find this overwhelming if they are single, or have broken up from a long term relationship or marriage.  For them it is a painful reminder of being alone and having no one to share this special day.

Valentine’s day comes so soon after Christmas and New Year……another time when being together with someone special or with family.   We no sooner put away the decorations and there in the shops are the Valentines cards.  So if you are alone particularly after a relationship break up, this is a “double whammy”. Being a Christian in this position does not make it any easier…..in fact often it highlights again that you have failed as a Christian as well as your relationship.

We read in Isaiah 61 v 1 those wonderful words “He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted”……which Jesus himself picks up in Luke 4 v 18-19.   Many years ago an American Pastor, Bill Flanagan started to pray for those behind the rising statistics for divorce, and then went on to set up “Divorce Recovery Workshops” and these workshop we designed to help those going through a broken marriage/relationship to come to termswith the pain and struggle associated with this difficult situation. The moto for DRW is “You can go through it or grow through it”.

DivorceRecoveryWorkshopLogoDRW came to UK in 1992 and has continued the work here.  The Norwich branch of DRW was set up in 2012 and has been successfully running courses since then.  It takes place at Witard Road Baptist Church Conference Rooms and courses run Spring and Autumn, with a residential weekend course for those who prefer this option, which takes place in July at Belsey Bridge Conference Centre, on Norfolk/Suffolk border.

What are Divorce Recovery Workshops?

They are suitable for anyone, of any age, at any stage of separation and divorce.

It is a series of six workshops that deal specifically with helping the individual come to terms with a marriage/long term relationship that has irretrievably broken down.

It is a proven self-help model run to a defined standard using volunteers from within, all of whom have experienced divorce or relationship break down.

The Spring course for Norwich Divorce Recovery Workshops commences on Tuesday February 24, 7 – 9.30pm at Witard Road Baptist Church, Witard Road, Norwich, NR7 9XD.

A social evening/open forum is being held on Valentine's Day, February 14 at the same venue from 5-8pm. Light refreshments will be served and you can meet the DRW Norwich team and find out more.
