Norwich sheriff and mayor to sleep under stars

The Lord Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich have both signed up to sleep under the stars for a night to help raise funds to support the work of YMCA Norfolk with homeless young people.

The Christian charity’s seventh annual Sleep Easy event takes place at the Soul Church Nursery site on Heartsease Lane in Norwich from 7pm on Friday February 12 to 7am on Saturday February 13.

Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Brenda Arthur, and Sheriff of Norwich Beryl Blower are among the first to sign up and organisers are appealing for dozens of other people to join them.

Participants will have a number of activities to keep them busy, including building their own cardboard shelters, before they brave the cold and sleep under the stars to raise funds for and awareness of homeless and vulnerable young people in Norfolk.

Lord Mayor Cllr Brenda Arthur, said: "During my time as Lord Mayor, I have had the opportunity to learn more about YMCA Norfolk and I am very impressed. I have heard, first-hand, compelling stories from young people whose lives have been changed for the better because of its work and so I am delighted to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity."

Sheriff Beryl Blower said: “YMCA Norfolk is doing a great job by supporting many young people in a non-judgemental way to grow in confidence and move forward with their lives.  Sleep Easy is a great way of highlighting the charity's work and raising much needed funds to help continue that work and I am delighted to be supporting it."

All funds raised from the event will go towards the work of YMCA Norfolk, including supported accommodation provided to over 260 young people every night who might otherwise be homeless

Church, youth club or company groups are very welcome to participate, as are individuals, and are asked to collect sponsors for their endeavours.
