Festival to showcase Norwich's historic churches

Norwich Historic Churches Trust (NHCT) has received £68,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to create an exciting festival weekend celebrating Norwich’s outstanding collection of medieval churches and showcasing the churches’ role in the city over the centuries.

Called Flintspiration and taking place on Saturday April 29 to Bank Holiday Monday May 1, 2017, the festival will enable people to explore and enjoy Norwich’s 31 medieval churches through a packed programme of events.

Events will include performances, family activities, a series of themed church trails and guided walks, open buildings and an exhibition housed in St Peter Mancroft, which will serve as a central visitor 'hub' for the two days, distributing a range of information (including trails), and acting as a starting point for bookable guided walks. In addition St Stephen’s Church will provide a family-friendly focus, offering activities for children including trails with rewards for completion.

Flintspiration will showcase the churches’ role in the city over the centuries and their importance as heritage assets, community and cultural venues and places of worship today.

Neil Blunt
, Project Director of Flintspiration and Vice Chair of the NHCT, said: “We are thrilled to receive this support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will help us celebrate Norwich’s fascinating medieval past. Today, Norwich has more medieval churches than any other city north of the Alps, an exceptional legacy and outstanding setting for the festival. We are planning a varied programme of events and hope to have something for everyone to enjoy and explore, whether they are visiting a church for the first or fiftieth time.”

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF East of England, said: “As one of the country’s largest cities during medieval times, and with a wealth of that heritage still intact, Norwich provides an outstanding glimpse into our medieval past. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players we’re pleased to support this project as it celebrates the city, its churches and communities.”

The NHCT is working with a range of partners on the project, including the University of East Anglia, Norwich City Council, Norfolk Museums Service, the Norwich Society, Norwich Cathedral, the Churches Conservation Trust, the Diocese of Norwich and the Friends of Norwich Historic Churches Trust.

The events programme and more details about Flintspiration will be announced in early 2017. Events are being co-ordinated by Project Officer Heather Guthrie, who can be contacted for general enquiries: heather.guthrie@norwich-churches.org, 01603 611530.
