Norfolk Christian Youth Football League season hots up

The Norfolk Christian Youth League is entering its final third of the season with cup games beginning and league title battles hotting up. Chairman Mike Culwick reports.

There are some very good teams at the top of the youth leagues, with leaders looking over their shoulders wondering if they will face a late challenge from their closest rivals.

But it is also so good to see how these teams at the other end of the table are enjoying every game they play. They are equally important as those at the top, which is a key reason why the league exists - to give boys and girls of all abilities an opportunity to play football in a well-run Christian football league. These lads who lack the skills to play games in other leagues are very welcome in the Christian league.

Under 10 League

The U10 league, under the leadership of Alan Barnes, has been very successful, with new teams Cringleford Polecats and Old Catton Soul fitting in very well. Four weeks of indoor futsal and five-a-side at UEA with no cups or medals to play for was a really enjoyable experience for all the teams.

Under 12 League

The new teams this year, Lowestoft Community Church and Old Catton Juniors Soul have set the pace this season, with Lowestoft unbeaten and Lighthouse just behind Old Catton Soul. A very successful season, with Surlingham and Silver Road always trying very hard, and always a pleasure to watch.

Under 14 League

Another successful league and as the teams get older they get a bit more competitive, but always playing with the ethos of the league being more important than the result. Lighthouse from Sheringham are beginning to pull away from Brooke.

Under 16 League

Just five teams this season to begin with but we now have welcomed Sprowston Youth engagement Project supported by St Cuthbert’s and other churches in Sprowston. Although small, this league has been a great success with all the lads just simply enjoying themselves on Saturday mornings.

We now have teams from Sheringham in North Norfolk all the way to Lowestoft on the Suffolk coast. Mattishall in Mid Norfolk and Mulbarton and Brooke from South Norfolk and, of course, many sides from Norwich.

We would love to see more teams in the league with a strong support from the local church, a great way to link in with the community.

Financing the league is always a bit of a challenge and we would welcome any businesses who would like to help us by advertising their business on the league website and at our finals and five-a-side events.

Donations from churches and individuals are also very welcome and would enable us to continue this mission on the football field.
