CBBC Newsround visits Wighton church
2017: A CBBC Newsround crew filmed a special Bat Night at All Saints Church in Wighton, near Wells, last week.
The event was hosted by the PCC and village community, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The highly successful evening saw a fantastic turnout of over 130 adults and children who enjoyed batty crafts and quizzes before learning more about bats as part of the nationwide Bats In Churches Project.
Bat expert, Philip Parker, was on hand to explain how these furry creatures use the church and churchyard, setting up detectors, infra-red cameras and screens to enable families to watch them fly in the twilight.
There was also an opportunity to meet with live bats at close quarters, and children were interviewed by the CBBC Newsround crew. The programme is expected to be aired in early August.
Sophie Trend, for Wighton’s PCC said: “We were delighted to welcome so many families into our historic, village church and excited that our furry, flying residents have a chance of TV stardom”.
All Saints Church is a friendly, active and welcoming church situated in the heart of the village. This historic building continues to serve both residents and visitors through Sunday services, coffee mornings and a variety of community events.
The Wighton Parochial Church Council (PCC) is the charity responsible for the financial affairs of the church and the care and maintenance of its fabric. The Bat Night is part of the PCC’s ongoing 600th Anniversary Restoration Project.
The Bats in Churches Project is a partnership between Natural England, The Church of England, Bat Conservation Trust, Historic England and the Churches Conservation Trust, funded by the HLF. The project is using the latest research to develop innovative solutions that support churches with bats.
