Easter Sonrise beeston hump 20

Will path re-open for Sheringham’s Easter witness walk?

2018: The annual Good Friday walk of witness to place the Easter cross on top of Beeston Hill will only be able to take place if the path re-opens in time following extensive re-surfacing. Tony Rothe reports.

Every Good Friday, worshippers from all Sheringham churches gather at St Peters Parish Church for a united service, followed by a mass walk of witness to nearby landmark Beeston Hump to erect the cross on top of the hill. They stop off at the clock tower in the town centre for a brief time of worship before completing the climb up the hill, where a brief service is held.

Hardy souls then return to the Hump at dawn on Easter Sunday morning for a Son-Rise service to celebrate Christ’s resurrection, before repairing to the Jesu centre in the town for bacon rolls.

This year, however, the Norfolk County Council Trails team have been reinforcing the footpath to Beeston Hump, and the whole area has been closed to the public since mid-February. A helicopter was used to ferry 106 tons of aggregates to the site on March 12, as there is no practical vehicular access.

Sheringham Easter cross 308The path is due to re-open on Maundy Thursday, just one day before the Good Friday walk is due to take place. Everyone in the town’s churches is waiting with bated breath to see if the works are completed on time so that the annual witness walk can proceed.

This year’s United service is at 10.45am on Friday March 30 at St Peters, with the walk of witness scheduled to set off at 11.15am. The Son-Rise service on the Hump should take place at 7am on Easter Sunday, April 1.

St Peters, St Josephs, the Salvation Army and Lighthouse Community Church all have services on Maundy Thursday, with the Lighthouse service concluding with the setting up of a cross in the car park.

After their early start, all the town’s churches will be celebrating the Risen Saviour later on Easter Sunday morning – Lighthouse worshippers will start by the cross outside the church.
