Record football cup final success for Norwich Baptist Church

Norwich Central Baptist Church (NCBC) beat Heigham Park Rangers 5-0 in the final of the Bishop Maurice Wood Cup on Saturday morning (April 13) completing an unprecedented triple double. Keith Morris reports.

The all-conquering NCBC team completed the Norfolk Christian Football league and cup double for the third year in a row – an unprecedented achievement.

The final kicked off at the Football Development Centre at Bowthorpe near Norwich in sunshine in front of a sizeable vocal crowd of over 100 after a welcome by Dr Trevor Hutley from final sponsors Norwich FGB, who spoke about the importance of teamwork.

League top scorer Daniel Jervis opened the scoring for NCBC after 15 minutes with a low header in the box. Less than five minutes later Daniel doubled the lead with a side foot from close-in.

BishopsCupFinal19Corner750It was all NCBC and after 25 minutes Ben Jervis put them in a commanding position with a shot from outside the box which struck the woodwork before entering the net.

Rangers then seemed to find their feet and had a good 20 minutes until half-time but could not reduce the deficit.

The second half started slowly but NCBC captain Ian Garrod put the result almost beyond doubt after an hour after the Rangers keeper dropped a cross and Ian poked it into the net.

Five minutes later Rangers conceded a penalty after a foul in the box and Ricky Bevis slammed it high into the goal.

Rangers won their own penalty in the dying minutes but even then they could not trouble the scoreboard when the NCBC keeper saved it.

League chairman, Jim Green, said: “It was a very sporting and well contested final, much closer than the 5-0 scoreline suggests. It was a particular achievement for NCBC. Their success is not just about winning games but also the hard work that goes into training, getting teams out and admin. Doing that for so long is a magnificent achievement.

“It was great to see such a sizeable crowd on the day and the FDC football staff remarked upon what a nice, lively, engaged and very pleasant crowd it was.”
