Reepham charity appoints bishop as patron

The re-use charity Scrapbox is resuming operations after lockdown, and has appointed the Bishop of Norwich, Rt Rev’d Graham Usher as its new Patron. Tony Rothe reports.

On Monday September 7, Bishop Graham met with volunteers, staff and trustees, as he formally took up his new role with the charity. Bishop Graham is known for his background in ecology and his enthusiasm for environmental causes, so the trustees were delighted when he accepted their invitation to take on a formal role with the charity.
For many people, engaging in craft activities has been an important way of enduring the long period of lockdown. Making things with your own hands is widely seen as a way of relieving stress and anxiety, but as craft activity increased across the nation, craft shops closed, and it became harder to get supplies.
Customers of Scrapbox in Reepham have had to cope without their regular visits to the charity, as the shop closed its doors back in March. However, the good news for all those crafters, and for the countless organisations and charities which use those resources, is that the Scrapbox Shop reopened on Wednesday September 9.
Over recent weeks, a great deal of work has been done by staff, trustees and volunteers to make the shop and warehouse ‘covid safe’. This work includes the introduction of a new door and one-way system around the shop as well as limits on the numbers allowed in the shop at any time.
Scrapbox Manager, Tula Chenery, said “We're really excited that we're now in a position to reopen, having been closed for 6 months, and knowing how desperate our members have become for resources. The Scrapbox shopping experience may be a little different for a while, but we've still got a fantastic range of reclaimed resources as usual in our revamped shop. Seeing the response to our reopening announcement on our Facebook page last week, we may have a bit of a rush on!”
The new opening hours for the Scrapbox shop will be Wednesdays 2-5pm, Thursdays 2-5pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm. No donations of materials will be accepted during September.
The reopening of the shop also brings with it a call for new volunteers, especially on Thursdays, as the team prepares stock for the shop. If you spare 3 hours either weekly, or occasionally, please contact Tula at infoscrapbox@gmail.com .
