St Francis church in Heartsease goes for growth

St Francis Church in Heartsease is organising a practical Let it Grow event this weekend to celebrate World Environment Day.

The church recently made the decision to work toward becoming an Eco Church. As a part of that initiative, it is launching its Let It Grow 2021 community project. The day will include activities, a quiz and refreshments.

Let It Grow is all about enabling interested Heartsease folk to find joy in tending the earth, living sustainably, and growing all sorts of vegetables, fruit and flowers. Based on the piece of land behind the church building, Let It Grow will be working in association with Norwich Farmshare to help make this happen.

Norwich Farmshare is an innovative project based at Whitlingham that encourages people of all ages and abilities to volunteer to help work their smallholding to grow seasonal, organic produce to enable poorly served communities to gain better access to healthy food.

The launch event will run from 10.30am until 4.30pm on Saturday June 5. Between 2pm and 4pm Joel and Phil from Farmshare will be joining in the fun by encouraging everyone to get their hands dirty preparing the ground for its first planting. There will be a special Earth Service taking place the next day in church on Sunday June 6 with guest preacher Julian Bryant, Regional Coordinator for Christian Aid.

Rev Janet Wyer, Vicar of St Francis, said: “We are very excited about our forthcoming Let It Grow weekend. This very special occasion marks the beginning of what promises to be fruitful partnership between St Francis and Norwich Farmshare. There will be lots of opportunities to try out some eco-friendly activities, to learn a little about growing things for eating or just for fun, and most importantly give us some time to be together outdoors, enjoying the wonders of God’s creation.  All are welcome to come and join in the fun.”
