Norfolk duo exploring faith and life through music

Norwich-based Christian musical duo, Honoured Guests released their first EP yesterday, a collection of four songs entitled Who We Are.

Matt Hubbard and Thomas Wilson met at Soul church and have been making music together since 2017. Both fathers to young boys, Matt is the main vocalist, as well as playing most tuned instrumentation, and Tom provides drums and produces alongside Matt.

“We have been working on creating music that has a depth of meaning specifically exploring the journey of faith and the reality of the flawed human psyche in such a way that we hope can communicate with a modern audience,” said Matt.

The four tracks on the EP are titled; Everyday Wonder, How Can You Say, My Heart Poured Out, & Ordinary People.who-we-are-ep-500

Tom said: “This release is bookended with explorations of praise through the wonder of creation as a whole and then more specifically focusing on the extraordinary creation of humanity - how no-one should ever think of themselves as anything other than extraordinary.”

The first track, Everyday Wonder, was released as a single in late 2023. It focuses on the marvels of the mundane and the beauty of the world that can pass us by in modern life.

“We're excited to include as many people in the creative process of music making as possible; Everyday Wonder is a great example of this. Vin Mpofu who features on the track was an old school friend of Matt's, Mike Jackson who plays one of the two guitar parts in the solo has known us both for years, and more than ten of our friends and family feature in the choir in the final chorus,” said Tom.

The centre tracks explore some more challenging aspects of life and faith.

How Can You Say explores the often complex journey of coming to terms with comprehending the ineffable, perfect, eternal nature of God, and how He loves us despite us repeatedly falling short. It was based on the story of the Prodigal son.

My Heart Poured Out expands on the process of accepting this truth in our lives. It celebrates that idea with a really fun outro, which is just a big expression of who we are as musicians.

“We have poured a lot of time and love into this release, our desire being that we can communicate a message that hasn't changed to a world that very much has,” said Matt.
