First free media workshop is held in Yarmouth

The first in a series of free media workshops for churches and Christians across Norfolk, as part of Network Norfolk’s 20th anniversary year, has been held in Great Yarmouth.

Staged at St Paul’s Church, Salisbury Road in Great Yarmouth on March 27, the training was led by website editor Keith Morris and East content editor Anna Heydon.

Participants came from churches across Yarmouth, Gorleston, Stalham and East and South Norfolk.

Julia Miller, from Kingsgate Community Church, said: “I thought all the content was really helpful and it could have been longer than two hours as there was lots of content to covered.”

David Griffiths from Banham Church and the Norwich Interfaith Forum, said: “It was very good and included both the basics and lots of practical information and discussion.”

Further workshops are set to run in:

Norwich, Wed April 23, 10am to 1pm, YMCA Norfolk Community Hub, Aylsham Road.

Sheringham, Wed April 30, 10.30am to 1pm, Lighthouse Church

King’s Lynn, Wednesday May 7, 10am and 12noon, Gaywood Church Rooms

The workshops will cover topics aimed at helping  churches and Christian organisations communicate their great work more effectively. It will be run by Keith, who is an experienced journalist, editor and communications director, and local Network Norfolk content editors.

Keith explains: "Each workshop can be tailored to those attending it and it works best if people come with ideas about what they want to communicate."

Topics will include some of:

  • How to tell your faith stories more effectively
  • What is a news story and how to write it.
  • Tips on writing a press release
  • Using different media channels to get your message out.
  • How to compose, take and edit a news picture.
  • Image and content copyright
  • The local media landscape
  • How to write for the web

Places are free, but will be limited to make sure that we can engage fully with participants to help them get the most out of the interactive workshops.
