Julian of Norwich lecture and festival event 2025

Friends of Julian is hosting The Julian Lecture alongside a joint event with the National Centre for Writing in Norwich next weekend.

This year’s Julian Festival will take place over two days with talks and services as well as the Friends of Julian Annual General Meeting.

Breaking the Habit: the allure of nuns in storytelling will take place on Friday May 9 at 7pm hosted by the National Centre for Writing in partnership with the Friends of Julian.

Join panellists — non-fiction writer and lecturer Hetta Howes, novelist Jess Kidd, and memoirist and former nun Catherine Coldstream — as they explore the inner and creative freedom embodied by nuns and why they continue to inspire writers, filmmakers, and artists alike.

The 44th Annual Julian Lecture will be given by Dr Hetta Howes at St Julian’s Church on Saturday May 10 at 12noon.

Hetta Howes is a lecturer in Medieval and Early Modern Literature at City, University of London, and a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker. She regularly contributes to broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and 4, as well as writing for publications such as The Times Literary Supplement and BBC History Extra. Her new book Poet, Mystic, Widow, Wife is written for a popular audience and features both Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe.

Hetta’s lecture, entitled Julian of Norwich: Having it All, will consider the concept of having it all in terms of Julian’s vocation and how she managed to find creative freedom and personal liberation by narrowing her focus.

A reservation is not needed for the Julian Lecture. However, you will need to book for the Friday event at the National Centre for Writing.
