Gorleston church organist's 10 hour marathon
An organist from St Peter's Church in Gorleston has completed a 10-hour marathon fundraising performance.
Matthew Hardy, who began playing the organ at St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Gorleston in 1970 at the age of 12, spent nearly half of a day playing to raise funds for the overhaul of the church's instrument.
The marathon, which took place on Saturday, saw a steady stream of visitors, including the mayor of Great Yarmouth. Throughout the day, the Chorus of St Cecilia sang popular hymns, alongside requests from attendees.
The event concluded with evening hymns, followed by a prayer and blessing from Father Alvin.
The fund will remain open throughout the year, with planned lunchtime concerts and a Christmas tree festival from December 17.
Mr Hardy was recently awarded a Certificate of Honour in recognition of his 55 years of service to the church.
