Attack prompts call to prayer for Yarmouth park

Oasis Chapel have been giving free refreshments as they chat to people in St George’s Park. However having witnessed a recent attack, they urge people to pray for the area.

A team from Oasis Chapel in Great Yarmouth has been offering free refreshments and a chance to chat in St George’s Park each Sunday over the last month, reaching out to the local community with love and practical support. But a recent incident when they witnessed a violent attack has prompted them to urge local Christians to pray for the park and town.

Each Sunday around lunchtime, the church has been serving tea, coffee, squash, and lollipops to anyone who passes by free of charge. Louise, a volunteer from Oasis Chapel reports, “People find it difficult to accept something for free…some of the poorest people who pass by try to give us money. We never accept, but our hearts are deeply touched.”

However, not every encounter in the park has been positive, and recently the team witnessed an unprovoked violent attack on a young man. Thankfully within minutes the young man was sitting up and receiving help from bystanders. “Violence, hatred and drug abuse in our communities is so sad and worrying. We could all be affected by it in one way or another.” Louise comments.

Despite the challenges, Louise sees the park as a blessing to the town: “St. George's Park is such a beautiful green space. It's lovely for children to play in, it's lovely for their parents to sit, chat and watch. It is a place of relaxation for all. Many homes in the town centre don't have gardens, so it's a garden everyone can enjoy. Keith the friendly Gardener keeps it beautifully, and so do other council workers.”

The church is encouraging fellow Christians to join in praying for the park, the town, and especially for the young man who was attacked.

Alongside the refreshments, team members have enjoyed chatting with local residents and talking about spiritual matters: “We have really enjoyed meeting people and sharing the Christian faith with them.” Louise said.

The team plans to continue every Sunday throughout July and will be switching to a mid-week slot during August.
