Solar energy plans for Fakenham church
Fakenham Parish Church has applied to install solar panels on its roof, which would cut its energy bills and could feed surplus electricity back into the National Grid.
St Peter's and St Paul's Church, which is Grade II listed, has applied to fit 44 solar panels to its south-facing roof. As well as supplying Fakenham with sustainable energy, the planning documents submitted to North Norfolk District Council say the solar panels would cut costs and ensure the long-term future of the church.
A new electric heating system was installed in September 2024, following the breakdown of the old gas boiler, and the solar panels are seen as the obvious next step in making the building greener and more self-sufficient. The Diocese of Norwich will contribute £10,000 towards the solar array if plans are approved.
Fakenham Church has already been praised for its environmental work, having been awarded Silver status by the Eco Church scheme run by Christian environmental group, A Rocha UK.
