North Walsham church makes escape easier
North Walsham’s mayor has opened a fire exit door at the town's Sacred Heart Catholic Church which has been widened to allow wheelchairs through.
Parishoner Cathy Watkins had one of the fire exits in the church hall widened to enable a wheelchair to exit the building in case of emergency. She said “We felt that the exit was too narrow for wheelchair users, so we acted upon it"
John Holden from the Sacred Heart said “It was the late Pope Francis I who earlier in the year opened the Jubilee Holy door in St Peter's Rome, as happens every 25 years to mark each Jubilee. Meanwhile, a door of a different kind was opened at our hall in North Walsham by our town Mayor, Clr. Bob Wright.”
The North Walsham Community Shop donated £500.00 to the cause. After the presentation of the cheque, Clr Wright said, “We are pleased to help fund the project by bring it up to fire regulations and improve accessibility.”
Mr Holden concluded, “Unlike the Holy door which will be closed by Pope Leo XIV at the end of the year, this will remain in use for over a life time to facilitate another fire exit especially for the disabled.”
