Successful music festival for Sheringham church
An all-day music festival at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Sheringham last month attracted an enthusiastic audience, and paves the way for a number of Christmas events at the church.
The inspiration for this community event came from Deacon Brenda Hayes, member at St Andrew’s, who says, “In the middle of a sleepless night, St Cecilia, the patron saint of music, came into my head, and on discovering that St Cecilia’s saint day was Saturday 22 November, the prospect of an exciting community event began to take shape.”
Throughout the day fourteen groups and individuals from Sheringham and the surrounding area performed a wide range of music from gospel, classical, folk, rock ‘n roll, sea shanties and humour. They performed to an enthusiastic audience who were encouraged to sing and dance along, and at times there was standing room only. Light refreshments were provided throughout the day with a hot-dog lunch.
The event was free, but donations went to ‘Musical Keys’, a Norwich-based charity which supports young people of all abilities, and people with dementia, through the medium of music. £500 was raised towards a proposed new ‘Musical Keys’ venture in nearby Cromer. Feedback was encouraging, with some asking if the event would take place again next year.
The church will be holding its Carols by Candlelight service at 7pm on Tuesday 16 December, followed by seasonal refreshments, and Christmas Café-style worship will take place at 10.30am on Sunday 21 December. There will also be a 10am service on Christmas Day. There is always a warm welcome at St Andrews’ regular 10.30am Sunday worship, which is always followed by refreshments.
