thorpe market snowdrops
Enjoy the snowdrops at Thorpe Market Church

All are invited to Snowdrop Sundays at Thorpe Market Church on Sunday afternoons in February when there will also be art exhibitions, music, and refreshments.

During the spring of 1999 a large number of snowdrops were planted in the churchyard of St Margaret of Antioch Church in Thorpe Market, and the flowers have been gradually spreading across from the original planting site ebver since, to now cover over half the churchyard.

Martin Castle, churchwarden at St Margaret’s, said “Last year we welcomed over 1100 visitors on the four Sundays. Visitors come from near and far and often return each year. When asked why they come it is, of course, to see the flowers, to view and buy art and to sit in a warm church with tea and cake. More interestingly, many speak about it being the start of their year visiting places of beauty and calm.”

Visitors are invited to the Snowdrop Sundays on the 1, 8, 15 and 22 February between 12 noon and 4pm. There will be an art exhibition by different artists on each weekend as well as the chance to browse the second-hand books. You can also relax with friends over hot drinks and the famed home-made cakes, and take a gentle walk around the churchyard to see the annual display of nature’s early flowering – the snowdrops. There is ample parking and you are sure of a warm welcome by the team of volunteers. Admission is free.

The artists this year, who are showing on both the Saturday and Sunday of the snowdrop weekends, are:

  • February 1 -  East Coast Artz - a group of local artists showing a diverse range of paintings, prints, cards, textiles, crafts and driftwood sculptures often inspired by the local environment.
  • February 8 -  Rosalie Osborne-Gibb, who exhibits regularly at St Margarets. With her love and inspiration of coast and countryside, from surf and sunsets to wildlife and landscapes, she will be showing the many aspects of her art in a bright and colourful exhibition.
  • February 15 – Amanda Springall-Rogers, Margaret Rogers, Sue Scheller and Alison Sawyer will be showing varied art, often based on their interaction with the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
  • February 22 – Emma Wilkinson, Denise Canderton and Vicky Wilkinson, showing paintings,  prints and ceramics, as well as glass jewellery, light sculptures, platters and much more. Emma, Denise and Vicky’s exhibition continues into the following week.

There will also be musical interludes each Sunday from Alan Morris on the church’s Norwich organ and sometimes a guest singer.

St Margarets is on Church road in the village - NR11 8UA
