“Let love be your greatest aim”

St Valentine’s day is rapidly approaching, but Ruth Lilley encourages us to show love to others throughout the year.

There are quite a few things around us right now which make us think of love. The shops all seem to have sections that are full of red and pink, the topic is on the TV, on the radio...but why should it seem that just Valentine's Day is associated with love? Why do we make such a big thing about love on February 14? Do we limit ourselves to show love on just one day of the year?

I’m not sure that is the case, however as I take a moment to consider - what if, every day, I put as much effort and intention into loving someone as I might on Valentine's Day? What if I purposely decided to tell someone or show someone how much I loved them every single day of the year?

Valentine’s Day encourages us to consider romantic love, but for some that will bring uncomfortable feelings. Yet, in changing our thinking and simply considering love, I am fortunate enough to first and foremost have three very special people that come to mind. Also, there are others who walk alongside me and bring love and blessing to my life.

So, if I purposely took time each day to think of someone to whom I could show love what a difference that would make. I would not be sharing this love just for something in return, it would be because it is good for our souls to know we are loved. It could be something as simple as a hug, or a note to say thank you. It could be taking the time to notice, or a word of encouragement, or a meal or a cake. It might be the gift of time and being present in the moment.

Why though? Why should I take my time to give to someone else when I don't get anything in return? It's simple really...because life should be all about love. 'Let love be your greatest aim.' 1 Corinthians 14:1 (Living Bible).

I can choose to influence my world, the paths I tread, the days I live. If I let love be my motivation, I can share love when it is tricky and find the strength to love even when that love is not shown in return.

With every sun comes a new day and the chance to choose love.
