Ukrainian children receiving Christmas present from North Norfolk donations
Sheringham church's ongoing Ukraine support

St Peter’s Church in Sheringham will hold its fourth annual service later this month to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and to affirm their ongoing support for those affected by the war.

Working closely with North Norfolk Aid for Ukraine (NNAFU), St Peter’s has consistently sought out opportunities to ensure the plight of Ukrainians in their homeland and across the globe is not sidelined. Anniversary services to commemorate the tragic scale of loss and community donation drives have become a pivotal element of the church’s mission since the war first began in 2022.

The local community has come together and sent vital items including medical supplies, toiletries, clothing, and a range of essential items for children and babies to Ukraine via the NNAFU. Ukrainian firefighters have received much-needed equipment, and Christmas toys have found their way to very deserving children thanks to the efforts of St Peter’s and the North Norfolk community.

Discussing why the church maintains such a keen focus on this issue, Revd Iain Grant, Assistant Curate for St Peter's, explained:

“Ukraine drops off the face of our news when something else happens in the world. We forget about it. Yet the people of Ukraine don't get that luxury. For them, the war is the only news, and it brings fresh horror each and every day. Christ calls us to love one another as we love ourselves, and Christ calls us to look to the most vulnerable. How can we follow Christ if we don't at least try and respond to the war in Ukraine?

“We hold a service each year to remind everyone that this conflict is still taking place, but also to remind the people of Ukraine and those Ukrainians who currently live in the UK that they aren't forgotten and that we will keep supporting them for as long as it takes. It means we can say that they are our neighbours and they are loved. We might not be powerful leaders in the world, but what small difference we can make, we will.”

The 2026 Service for Ukraine will take place at 4pm on Sunday 22 February, with all money raised supporting the work of North Norfolk Aid for Ukraine. St Peter’s is in Church Street, Sheringham, NR26 8QS.
