Wiveton st Mary church
Help keep the rain out of Wiveton Church

St Mary’s Parish Church in Wiveton has launched a crowd-fund to raise funds for urgent repairs to the church building, and pottery designer Emma Bridgewater is lending her support to the campaign.

The immediate need is to save the medieval windows for which the crowd-funding target of £25,000 by November has been set. If this is not achieved, there is a danger that some of these windows will fall out and will have to be blocked up. The architect has advised that each window will cost £18,000 to repair.

This is part of a wider fundraising project to raise £500,000 in total. To ensure the effectiveness of the repairs to the windows, extensive work is also needed to replace the guttering and soakaways to the nave, none of which have had any attention since at least Victorian times and probably longer.

The churchwardens are approaching grant making bodies and will be carrying out a series of fund-raising events throughout the year. Exclusive rewards available for those who donate, including your family name etched on a window, and the opportunity to acquire a specially designed Emma Bridgewater mug.

As part of the fundraising efforts, a short crowdfunding film has been compiled, which features one of the local residents, Dame Emma Bridgewater, the well-known pottery designer and manufacturer, together with the Rector, Rev Jonathan Dowman.

Wiveton Church, apart from being an historic Grade 1 listed building sitting on the banks of the River Glaven, a former seafaring port, is an active community hub hosting, in addition to the normal church related activities, a variety of concerts and events including a national net zero conference last year.
