UEA Baroque Ensemble in Norwich church concert

St George's Church in Norwich will host the UEA Baroque Ensemble next month.

UEA Baroque Ensemble in concert will take place at St George Church, Tombland on Sunday May 10 at 4pm.

The programme will include music by J S Bach (Suite No 2 for flute and strings), Vivaldi (Recorder concerto), as well as Handel and Purcell. Admission is free but a retiring collection will be taken in aid of church funds.

The small orchestral concerts started three years ago with the ensemble drawn from staff and students at the University. More recently they have focused on music from the baroque period. The church’s setting lends itself to this period music as well as having good acoustics.

John Brydon from the church said: “The ensemble clearly enjoy playing to an audience and very generously have given their time and expertise freely with all donations going to church funds.

“St George is a grade I medieval church dating back to the 13th century. Out of an original estimated number of 63 city churches 31 have survived, of which St George is one of 8 still in regular weekly use for worship. Given the buildings age and its grade, restoration work is almost continuous and expensive. In recent years we have had to restore the tower staircase, deal with a major leak from the tower roof, remove and reglaze the west window as well as undertake numerous other small jobs.

“Currently we are working to raise funds to restore the church clock gifted in 1768. All this has been possible due to the generosity of the congregation, Friends of St George, grants from English Heritage, the National Lottery and other bodies as well as fund raising events," said John.
