Norfolk church serving after-school youth
Friday’s end of school bell now has very special significance for a group of lively young people in Brundall. Not only does it signal the end of the school week, but it also heralds that it’s time for their very own get-together at Place 2B Me.
Just a year ago, Rev’d Peter Leech, Rector of Yare Valley Churches decided the time was right to try out a new idea. So at 3.30pm every Friday afternoon young people between the ages of 11 and 15 are invited to ‘take-over’ the Church Room at St Laurence Church, Brundall. Now around 30 lively youngsters get together to celebrate the end of the school week and chill-out with their friends.
It’s a unique fun event where soft drinks, hot chocolate and various refreshments are enjoyed. The event is overseen by church volunteers who are able to keep a low profile whilst the young weekenders listen to pop music, read comics, play pool, hone their play-station skills or just relax and have a ‘quiet’ chat with their buddies.
Rev’d Leech says "It has been great to see so many young people coming to the Place 2B Me and we look forward to seeing it develop further as the church room refurbishment progresses.”
May Day marked the first anniversary of the group and the Bishop of Thetford, Rt. Revd Alan Winton came along came along to join in the fun. Bishop Alan commented "It was great fun to come and see the group and be part of the first anniversary celebration. The young people were clearly having a great time and it's lovely to see the church serving the community in this way”.
Even a Bishop allows a selfie! Bishop Alan Winton is pictured with Rev'd Peter Leach and volunteers.
