POPE DIPLOMATIC CORPSFoundations of international coexistence are being undermined

Pope Leo has issued a strong appeal for humility, dialogue, and a renewed commitment to multilateralism – a cry that should resonate with all Christians

In his 9 January 2026 address to the Diplomatic Corps, Pope Leo XIV offered a courageous and timely moral vision at a moment when the world’s political landscape is marked by rising conflict, eroding multilateralism, and a troubling ‘zeal for war.’

Drawing on the authority of St Augustine’s
De Civitate Dei, Leo reminded political leaders that (ultimately) peace cannot be pursued through weapons and coercion, but only through justice, dialogue, and respect for human dignity - pillars that resonate deeply with Christian teaching and the calling of all people of faith.

I found Pope Leo’s clarity in condemning the replacement of diplomacy with force, and his insistence that fundamental human rights be upheld even amid geopolitical strain, both prophetic and pastoral. His appeal for renewed international cooperation, adherence to international humanitarian law, and a recommitment to the common good speaks directly to the growing and alarming anxieties of our time.  It also speaks to the sacred vocation of Christian discipleship in the public square.

As someone committed to nurturing unity among Christians and fostering constructive engagement across different communities, I find his leadership deeply encouraging. In a world too often divided by partisan interests and distrust, Leo’s call for humility, dialogue, and mutual respect provides an important and timely Christian witness and a model for all of us who long for peace.

I warmly commend the full speech to readers and urge every church leader and ecumenical partner to reflect prayerfully on its message.
