New youth resource from King's Lynn vicar
A new resource ‘Hanging out with Jesus’ designed for youth groups of 9-14 year olds has been published this week written by Rev Corin Child, Vicar of St John the Evangelist in King's Lynn.
‘Hanging out with Jesus’, written by Rev Corin Child (pictured right), Vicar of St John the Evangelist Church in Kings Lynn and published by BRF, contains six interactive Bible Studies aimed at 9-14 year olds plus useful guidance and context on how to run a group that engages this age group.
The six sessions focus on people whose lives were changed by meeting Jesus, including Zacchaeus, Martha and the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
In his forward, Cris Rogers, Vicar of All Hallows Bow in Tower Hamlet said: “What makes this book distinctive is its focus on Jesus and nothing other than him. Often we try to disciple our young people in the ways of ‘Christianity’ or the ways of the ‘church’ or even the ways of ‘religion’, but it’s Jesus who is the fascinating one. This book will help you and your ‘tweenagers’ engage with Jesus and all that he wants for us. “
Corin originally developed the 'Hanging out with Jesus' material as a confirmation course at St Johns, before adapting it over the course of five years for wider use with young people. He has since used the material with various groups and is currently working through it with the newly formed youth group KLYP (Kings Lynn Youth Project), an initiative of Kings Lynn Churches Together, which includes his own 9 year old son.
For each of the six sessions the book includes discussion prompts, a worksheet, a short Bible study, fun game ideas and time for reflection. While the material is fun, lively and interactive, it is the emphasis on encouraging reflection, silence and response during sessions that make this youth resource different.
Rev Corin Child said: “I’m really keen on the idea that we don’t just bring up young people to come up with the right answers; we want them to actually be ready to respond and used to responding, so that they are able to sit down with a Bible and talk to God about it – not just please their group leader. It is a wonderful thing to see young people being prayerful and taking faith seriously.”
Corin Child has been ordained for 10 years, working in King’s Lynn since 2007. He is the Moderator of Churches Together in Kings Lynn and a chaplain at the College of West Anglia. Before being ordained he worked as a Christian schools worker in South London taking assemblies and RE lessons. For 10 years Corin was involved in leading a holiday camp for 10-13 year olds. His experience and passion for working with this age group is demonstrated in the text.
He said: “It is a very enjoyable age group. It is a real shame if people of that age group go missing from our churches, not only for their sake but also for the churches’ sake because they are so much fun to work with.”
Corin is a committee member of the Association of Christian Writers. He has previously had a booklet published by Grove, called ‘Telling Ourselves in Ink: Creative Writing in the Church'. He is now working on his next book to be published by BRF in 2014 called 'Journaling the Bible', encouraging people to complete creative and responsive journal entries as they look at passages of the Bible over a 40 day period.
Hanging out with Jesus was published on 19 April 2013, £8.99, ISBN 978 1 84101 790 7. It is widely available online and through Christian bookshops.
