Yarmouth - Simon Ward inductio

New Yarmouth Team Rector comes home

2017: It was a homecoming for the Rev Simon Ward at St Nicholas Minster on Tuesday August 8, when he was instituted and inducted as the new Great Yarmouth Team Rector in the town where he was born.

The new leader of the Yarmouth Team Ministry was born 45 years ago at the Northgate Hospital Maternity Unit close to St Paul’s Church, Newtown, where his late father the Rev Leslie Ward began his ministry in the mid-1960s before becoming Rector of Belton and Burgh Castle. Simon Ward grew up in the village for the first 11 years of his life, and then became a teacher before going into the ministry.
After serving as a curate in Guildford he became Team Vicar at Southwold. He spent some time as Chaplain to the Bishop of Norwich before moving to Earlham where he has been priest in charge responsible for three churches for the past three years. His wife Georgette works at the University of East Anglia and they have two sons.
"Welcome home, Simon" said the Bishop of Thetford, the Rt Rev Alan Winton. “It’s the first time I’ve inducted someone to the parish where they were born”. “It feels good to be back home” Simon told the large congregation which local dignitaries and representatives from his previous churches as well as family members.
The Bishop praised those who had continued the work of the church since the retirement the previous Team Rector, Chris Terry, in September. He also thanked the Rural Dean, the Rev John Kinchin-Smith for his work, who said “This is a special moment for this team and for Great Yarmouth”
After the formal institution the Archdeacon of Norwich, the Ven Karen Hutchinson led the traditional induction which included Simon Ward standing by the main door of the Minster ringing a hand bell to announce the start of his new ministry. He was also welcomed by civic leaders and those from other churches and faiths. The service was followed by a buffet.
