Julian of Norwich inspired exhibition open for Lent

Lent with Julian of Norwich, an exhibition at St Stephen’s, is open until Easter bringing together the artwork of Frances Martin with words of Julian and scripture.

The exhibition is open with the café Monday to Saturday 10am to 3pm.

It brings together artworks by Frances Martin with words from Julian of Norwich and scripture chosen by Madeline Light, the vicar at St Stephen’s.

Frances is one of the Norwich 20 Group of artists well known in the city. She became a friend of St Stephen’s when she and other artists joined with the church to reflect on the pandemic through their artistic work, in 2021. That show has turned into the Annual Community Festival.

“I have asked Frances to hang her depictions inspired by Julian’s revelations during Lent. They are based on the revelations of the Passion of Jesus and emphasise, the blood, the crown of thorns and death. There are a number of drawings of Julian herself near the front of church,” said Madeline.

Madeline has curated words from Julian of Norwich and scripture around the topics of crown of thorns, blood and death. A leaflet provides a way of linking Frances’ pictures with scripture verses and quotes from Julian of Norwich’s ‘Revelations of Divine Love’ from ‘All Shall be Well’.

“The verses from scripture put alongside the artwork and words of Julian, are provided to help our meditation on what Julian reveals about the love of God for humanity.

“Preparing for this has been inspiring and surprising. I hope you find the writing by Julian, the artwork by Frances and some verses from the Bible a blessing this Lent,” said Madeline.
