Norfolk churches GenR8 interest in Christmas story

Genr8 Norfolk22009: Volunteers from West Norfolk churches are bringing the Christmas story to hundreds of primary school children this month through fun, interactive presentations produced by Christian organisation GenR8.

Schools approach GenR8 to book a free presentation for their school or year group. The lively, interactive presentations include songs, puppet sketches and drama and they are a way of communicating the Good News to young people in a relevant way.

It is generally accepted that 92% of children and young people don't have any connection with church so GenR8 recognises this is a significant opportunity to connect with them.

Kevin Baldwin, Schools worker for the CROWNS Trust heads up the West Norfolk GenR8 team. Kevin says, "This is the second year we have put on these termly presentations and we are working with 34 schools in West Norfolk around the Advent theme. Many churches already have a good working relationship with their local school so we are backing up what they are already doing by reinforcing the Christian message. What we do is more than just an assembly, it is a full production on a Christian theme."

Comments from local schools:

  • "Thank you very much. We really appreciated your talents, knowledge and enthusiasm." Ingoldisthorpe C of E Primary School
  • "The humour and visual element was good." Pott Row First School
  • "We really look forward to and appreciate your visits - keep up the excellent work. Thank you very much." Gayton CE VC First School

genr8 norfolk1The material for the presentations is supplied by GenR8's head office in Cambridge and is presented by volunteers from local churches. It is important to show that the work is part of the local Christian community so GenR8 recruits volunteers from all Christian denominations. They have found that schools often appreciate an ecumenical approach, and it sends out a positive message that Christians are working together.

Sandy Gammon, a volunteer from Seabank Chapel in King's Lynn says, "It's a wonderful opportunity to go into schools and tell the children and teachers the real meaning of Christmas. We also go in at Easter time and in the summer term.  The response from the children and teachers is great. We would like to increase the team size so we can go into more schools"
