West Norfolk church hosts family fun day

St Edmunds ChurchSt Edmund's Church, Downham Market is to host a fun day on Saturday September 10 where a new real ale - Martyr's Blood - will be launched by a Norfolk Brewer.

The history fair and fun day on Saturday 10 September is part of the National Heritage Open Days scheme. The beautiful Grade 1 listed St Edmund's Church will be open to the public between 10.30 and 4.30 with trips up the bell tower, traditional fete games and a chance to sample the new beer at the beer tent courtesy of local brewer Tony Hook from the Wissey Valley Brewery. The ale is the Martyr's Blood beer, tinted with local blackberries, commissioned by the Rector of St Edmund's Church.

There will be local history and community stalls inside the church. Out on the church field will be traditional games; a coconut shy, splat the rat, hook-a-duck, village stocks, etc. Anglo-Saxon re-enactors are holding a living history encampment.

Other activities include the Tenor Ladies Acappella Quartet, craft stalls, and many other events, with ploughman's lunches in the Church Hall. Events for children include a swing boat ride, and ponies to pet from the Riding for the Disabled Association at Wallington.

Organisers are hoping that people coming to the event will be inspired to dress in historical costume. There will be a prize for the best costume.

This great day out for all the family is being organised by St Edmund's Parochial Church Council.
