Thetford Foodbank extends into Watton

Thetford Foodbank2013: Thetford Foodbank has fed almost 1,000 people and helped launch new Foodbank initiatives in Watton and Brandon - all in its first 13 months of operation.

Thetford Foodbank, a project of Thetford Christians Together, was launched at the end of December 2011 and has subsequently distributed 10 tonnes worth of food packages to 958 people in crisis (including 637 adults and 321 children).

As well as meeting increasing need within Thetford itself, the project has also launched new Foodbank distribution centres in Watton and Brandon.

The distribution centres exchange food packages which provide 3 days food provision to people facing financial crisis in return for vouchers, which are distributed by local primary care agencies.

Ali James, Project Manager of Thetford Foodbank said: “It was always our intention to extend the service from our one distribution centre at the Liberty Centre to areas that don’t have any other food provision. Thetford town centre is well covered by the Salvation Army food pantry service who do a fantastic job, so we have also focused on extending into the surrounding areas.”

From mid-November, two Foodbank sessions a week have been based at the Colin Mackenzie Centre, Rear of 13b High Street, Watton, IP25 6AB on Mondays and Thursdays, 3-4.30 pm

Another weekly session is based at the Harvest Centre, Fengate Drove, Brandon, IP27 0PW on Tuesdays, 12.30-1.30 pm.  Both centres are supported by a partnership of local churches.

In Thetford the Foodbank opens every Saturday morning, 10.30-12 noon and Monday afternoon, 12.30-2 pm at the Liberty Centre, 5 Kelvin Place, Thetford, IP24 3RR

Since September it has also had an additional setting at Wellspring every Friday evening from 6-10 pm at the Church on the Way, Admirals Way Estate, Thetford, IP24 2JZ.

Following a successful Harvest appeal and Christmas supermarket collections the Foodbank has been well stocked, but the need continues to grow rapidly.

Ali explains: “Demand on the Foodbank is increasing fast as more voucher holding agencies come on board.  We’re seeing a huge need, particularly with our two new distributions centres opening in Watton and Brandon.  It is really important that food keeps coming in because people can’t go hungry”.
