Sheringham churches celebrate the 1940’s

2016: The 1940’s weekend in Sheringham gets bigger every September, and this year at least three Sheringham churches are taking part by providing special events.  Tony Rothe reports.

The 1940's - themed weekend will take place on September 17 and 18. This is based around the North Norfolk Railway, but many of Sheringham’s shops and businesses will reflect a wartime theme, and the town will be packed with visitors and locals wearing 1940’s outfits.

Lighthouse Community Church will be holding a Naffi Café on Saturday September 17 from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The café will be serving 1940’s-style food, served up by the Lighthouse Land Girls. There will be live music and, hopefully, a great atmosphere.
Maggie Rothe, café manager, said “There is always a real buzz in the town during the 1940’s weekend. Our “Naffi Café” provides an opportunity for us to get involved with those celebrations and engage with some of the many thousands who will be in the town that weekend. It should be lots of fun.”
Lighthouse is at 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT. Visit www.lighthousesheringham.org

St. Peter's Church will be a vintage wedding celebration at 2pm on the Saturday, when there will be an opportunity for those who wish to renew their wedding vows to do so. There will be a short service in the style of a 1940’s wedding during which wedding vows will be renewed en masse. Father Andrew Lane will administer a common set of vows for couples to simultaneously renew their respective marriages.
The event is free and there is no need to book.  There will be a retiring collection and donations for refreshments. For further information, please contact Jenny Comper at macjack007@hotmail.com or on 07780 926876.
St. Peter's Church is in Church Street, Sheringham, NR26 8QS

Sheringham Salvation Army is holding a special Songs of Praise, 1940’s style at 6pm on Sunday September 18. The service will be led by Major James Williams and will feature songs from the 1940’s.  The Salvation Army citadel is in Cremer Street, Sheringham, NR26 8DZ.
The Salvation Army Charity Shop in Church Street in the town will be selling period clothes and accessories between Saturday September 3 and September 17. This will provide a great opportunity for those visiting the town over the weekend to get kitted out in appropriate gear.
