High profile evangelist stirs Sheringham church

2016: Roy Crowne, executive director of Hope Together, spoke at Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham, concluding the church’s “Stir 16” series of talks by high profile speakers. Tony Rothe reports.

Roy talked about his work with Youth For Christ and with Hope Together, inspiring the church to continue and develop its work with other churches in Sheringham to tell everyone about the good news of Jesus Christ.
Roy Crowne 300CFRoy was National Director of Youth For Christ for 13 years, during which time he brought many new ideas to the organisation, and led many new initiatives, including a gospel project in the chapel at Alton Towers.
A meeting with Andy Hawthorne and Mike Pilavachi in 2007 led to the formation of Hope 08 (now Hope Together) with the aim of encouraging churches to work together to proclaim the Good News of Jesus throughout the UK.   Its three requirements were that churches should work together to reach communities, their activities should combine both action and communication the Word, and that whatever they do must be a step of faith.
They commissioned research which showed that the public were surprisingly open to learning about Jesus, and which suggested that many more people could potentially come to faith if Christians actually tell them about Jesus. People now seem to be more confident about sharing their faith with friends and family than previously.  The results are available at http://www.talkingjesus.org/
Roy described how Hope Together worked with the Bible Society and the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity in order to publish “The Servant Queen” to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s ninetieth birthday earlier in 2016. This described the Queen’s deep faith, and the publishers were privileged that Her Majesty agreed to write a foreword endorsing the book, which was the highest selling book in Britain in March this year.
In 2017, Hope Together are planning to publish a book demonstrating the historical accuracy of the life of Jesus, supported by a video filmed in the Holy Land. The book will be available widely through churches for just £1, and all churches will receive a copy of the video. Every church in Britain will be challenged to grow by 10% in 2018.
“Non-Christians simply cannot understand when churches won’t work together” explained Roy. “But unity must go hand in hand with a purpose – and that purpose must be to transform communities. When churches come together God will bless them – No one church will do it”.
