Music and recycling at Thorpe Market church
St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market continues to engage with their local community with a music workshop and concert on Good Friday, and an ongoing highly successful recycling scheme. Tony Rothe reports.
The Good Friday choral workshop and performance of Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” on March 30 will be open to anyone to attend. This is organised by the Cantamus Choir who regularly rehearse and perform in the church, and is the occasion in the choir calendar when choral singers are invited to join Cantamus Choir for a combined workshop and performance. There will also be invited soloists, with Geoffrey Hunter accompanying on the organ.
The afternoon workshop will run from 3 - 5pm concluding with the evening performance at 6.30pm at St Margaret’s Church, to which everyone is welcome.
On a more down-to-earth level, the community recycling scheme at the church has been highly successful, with 22.5 tons of glass and paper avoiding landfill over the last 12 months, resulting in a tax rebate of over £1200 for church funds.
The church car park also “hosts” a Salvation Army clothing skip and there is the book-recycling inside the church, where used books are sorted by the librarian and are available to purchase, borrow or swap.
Margaret Hunter from the church said, “We like to think we are one of the “greenest” churches in the area, and that is without including the churchyard wildflower management for which St Margaret’s is renowned.”
