Cromer BeachFest outreach launches in August
BeachFest 2021 is a new and exciting children’s outreach venture run by Cromer Church, which launches in the town next month, and families with children up to 11 years are warmly welcome to come along. Tony Rothe reports.
Activities will take place every Wednesday morning throughout the school summer holidays in venues around the town, and all the events are free. Each event will be rooted in the gospel, giving opportunities to share the love of Jesus. There will be fun and games for families suitable for children up to the age of 11. It is hoped that families will stay for the full two hours each week, but it is also possible for them to dip in and out of each event if they prefer to do this.
Beachfest follows on from the very popular Cromer Beach Mission that was held in the town for over 150 years and led by Scripture Union. It was very well attended in its heyday and many people have very fond memories of the tradition of that event.
Jackie Austin, Chair of the Cromer Church Mission Leadership Team, explains, “Two years ago we decided that it was time for Cromer Church to take ownership of the summer missional event and so now for the first time we are flying solo and organising it all independently from Scripture Union, albeit a year later than planned due to the pandemic.
“This year we have decided to start with one event per week rather than a whole week of activities as the Beach Mission did. We think that, by doing it this way, we will reach a different set of holiday makers each week, whilst also giving local families an event to look forward to, giving some structure to the school summer holidays. Also, by doing it weekly we may well find it more manageable for the team taking on this new venture!”
Cromer Church Mission Leadership Team have planned the event, drawing on a number of the Cromer Church family to be on the team as well as inviting some people from local churches to take part.
The programme of events from 10am to 12 noon every Wednesday in August is as follows:
4th: Sandcastle Competition on Cromer Beach. Bring buckets and spades.
11th: Fun and Games in North Lodge Park. (In the Parish Hall if wet)
18th: Pop up Event in Cromer Churchyard. (In the Parish Hall if wet)
25th: Family Event in Cromer Churchyard. (In the Parish Hall if wet)
Families are invited to bring their picnic lunch to enjoy after each of these events.
On Wednesday September 1, from 12 noon, families can enjoy their picnic on the beach followed by a tide fight, where they will defend their part of the beach as the incoming tide advances! Bring your buckets and spades.
As part of the summer activities at Cromer Church, Christian singer and songwriter Bean Baker will be appearing with his band in the church on Thursday August 26 at 7pm. The aim of the concert is to reach the adults of the families that have enjoyed the daytime BeachFest events, as well as reaching out to the local community. No tickets needed, just a suggested £5 donation at the door.
