Sheringham Methodists' Fairtrade boost

The ‘Fairtrade for Sheringham’ group, run by members of the town’s Methodist church, have been visiting summer fayres in North Norfolk to raise awareness of the range of Fairtrade products available. Tony Rothe reports.

The group set out their stall at Aldborough Village Fayre and Gresham Methodist Church’s Strawberry Tea & Fayre during June and July, including their very popular tombola which drew attention to the many Fairtrade goods available.

Jean Parton from the group said “All such purchases ensure that the producers of commodities such as bananas, tea, coffee, sugar, dried fruit, chocolate and many more, receive a fair price for their crops.  This enables them to improve their standard of living as well as enabling a more sustainable use of land to take place.”

Also, Mars, Fairtrade and ECOOKIM – a collection of cocoa farming co-operatives in Côte d’Ivoire – have announced plans to deepen their partnership, through an innovative $10m programme to raise farmer incomes. Visit the Fairtrade website to find out more about this.

The group is proud of the fact that Sheringham is a Fairtrade town and encourages all commercial enterprises as well as the general public, to shop Fairtrade as much as possible.  Look out for the Fairtrade logo when out shopping.
