Fakenham Church lights up for Advent
Everyone is invited to a special “Service of Light” at Fakenham Parish Church on November 24 at 6.30pm to experience the lighting of the church to celebrate the start of Advent. Tony Rothe reports.
Advent is the period of preparation for Christmas - the joyful celebration of the coming of Jesus, the light in our darkness. The service seeks to explore this mysterious movement from the depths of human darkness into the light of God's truth; in readings and in music for choir and congregation.
As the procession of choir and clergy moves through the church, and the light grows from a single candle at the west end to the climax of a fully candlelit church, so hearts and minds are moved by the mystery of God's love for all.
“Lay aside all your other preparations for Christmas for just one hour”
urged Rev Adrian Bell
, vicar of Fakenham
, “Come and pass "From Darkness into Light" at this special Advent service, and begin to prepare to receive God's gift of Jesus Christ.”
This special evening service has been held annually since 1994 at Fakenham Parish Church
to mark the beginning of preparations for Christmas, and to join in singing favourite Advent hymns.
Choir music this year includes works by Charles Wood, Felix Mendelssohn, Eric Thiman, Benjamin Britten and specially written pieces by Chris Brown, the Parish Church Organist.
