Wroxham church opens Trafford Mausoleum for day

2016: The Mausoleum of the Trafford family in St Mary’s Churchyard, Wroxham will be open for just one day this year, on Sunday, September 11, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about this interesting local family and their resting place.

The Trafford Mausoleum is not normally open to the public, but St Mary’s Church and the Trafford family would like to invite people on Sunday, September 11 from 11am to 4pm, to come and learn more about the interesting history of not just the building but also of the family.

Most people have heard of Old Trafford and some can probably name the famous football team that plays there. What most people do not know is that the Trafford family, now living in Wroxham, once owned Trafford Park in Manchester, which is where the world famous football stadium was built and which is named after them.

The Mausoleum is in need of some repair and the family is keen to make sure that the building is preserved for future generations so that the wider community can learn about it and enjoy its fascinating heritage.

Event organiser Saul Penfold said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for members of the public to come and see a fascinating building and to give us their views on the conservation project and what activities they would like to see here in the future’.

The Mausoleum is situated in the churchyard of St Mary's in Wroxham and was designed in 1831 by the famous Victorian architect, Antony Salvin. It is now the resting place of many members of the Trafford family and is a beautiful and peaceful place, designed and built to look medieval.

Everyone is welcome to come and discover the secrets of the Mausoleum and to learn more about the Trafford family – including the heroic Sigismund Trafford who fought at the Battle of Waterloo and wrote some amazing letters home about his adventures.

St Mary's Church will be open to explore and will be offering free tea and coffee throughout the day. There will also be a new heritage detectives’ quiz for children and families to take part in and a guide who can answer any questions you might have.
