Christian appointed as vicar for Sheringham
2009: North Norfolk will be welcoming Rev Christian Heycocks as the new vicar of St Peter's church, Sheringham next month.
Rev Heycocks is currently chaplain to the staff at Cambridge university and Associate Vicar at Great St Mary's, the university church in Cambridge.
Christian said, ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Cambridge and will be sad to leave, however as a family we are very excited about moving to Sheringham and North Norfolk. I look forward to my future ministry there and would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people from St Peter’s Church and from the town as a whole who have already offered us a warm welcome. Apart from our time in Cambridge we have always lived by the sea. We feel as if we have been called home once again.’
Christian was born in Wrexham, North Wales and was ordained as a priest in June 1998. In September 2000, he took the Queen’s commission as a chaplain in the Royal Navy and, following Officer and Commando training, he went on to serve primarily with the Royal Marines Commandos for the next six years. He served on the front line in Afghanistan in 2002 and Iraq in 2003 and has travelled to many other countries around the world, including freezing winters in the Arctic Circle.
In the 1990s Christian was a semi-professional basketball player and has played in both the UK and USA. He is married to Nia, a staff nurse, and they have a young daughter called Molly and a mad springer spaniel called Boots.
Christian will be instituted by the Bishop of Norwich and inducted by The Venerable David Hayden at St Peter, Sheringham Church on Friday April 24 at 7.30pm.
